FORWARD FOCUS – STUDENT BUILT CHAIRS CREATED FROM WASTE

Melbourne Design Week 2024

I had the most memorable experience and the pleasure of being one of the creative mentors to the students at the Hester Hornbrook Academy on a chair-making two-day workshop facilitated by Zachary Frankel.

In a world obsessed with hierarchy and perfection, a collective of students and creative mentors embarked on an experimental and collaborative workshop experience. Dreamed up by Zachary Frankel, students from Hester Hornbrook Academy, a special assistance school supporting students with social and emotional challenges, were tasked to produce a chair entirely from what is perceived as ‘waste’. Using limited tools, the students explored the potential of raw materials, by-products of Tait’s manufacturing processes.

NEW CONTAINA edition

Clear Frost + Vivid Red - Edition 05

Containa is an encased furniture series that explores the narrative of the vessel and its contents.

Edition’s 01 to 05 focus on an organic, sculptural, wood-turned form, housed within mitre bonded shards of frosted glass, protected, still, and delicately floating in what appears to be a blanket of fog.

Attained through a combination of natural materials combined with traditional and modern machining techniques. This results in a functional art piece that is perceptible in both design precision and organic composition, a symbolic exploration of confinement and protection.

NEw series release

Full Moon

The Full Moon series was conceived as a sculptural vessel to convey a sense of intrigue and mystery. Crafted by hand, each moulded moon is created with materials that closely resemble its appearance. Grounded pigments of stainless steel and matt white fused forms float weightlessly within a transparent clear cast resin matter, as if supported by gravity.

Encased within linear glass sheets that interact with the sphere’s appearance from the vessel’s exterior, creating unexpected distorted moon shapes, offering a three-dimensional distillation of the world around them.

With two variations of glass, the fluted distorts the orb’s perception, while the frosted conveys a silencing fog that erases all depth and detail.

Created during a full moon period, this series explores the interplay of materiality, depth and manipulation of form.
